Stainless Steel Jewellery: Why It Won't Tarnish

Stainless steel jewellery keeps its shine without the polishing routine. Here's why it resists tarnish — and what that means for everyday wear.

There's nothing more disappointing than pulling a favourite piece out of the jewellery box to find it dull, discoloured or green around the edges. That dulling is tarnish — and it's the single biggest reason people give up on costume jewellery.

Stainless steel doesn't have that problem. Here's why, and what it means for the pieces you wear every day.

What is tarnish, exactly?

Tarnish is what happens when a metal reacts with the air and with your skin. Silver, brass and copper oxidise over time — sulphur in the air, moisture and the natural oils and acids on your skin all speed it up. The result is a dark film or a greenish tinge, and the shine you paid for slowly disappears.

Gold plating is worse in a different way: it doesn't just tarnish, it wears through, exposing the base metal underneath. That's why plated pieces often look patchy within a few months of daily wear.

Why stainless steel resists tarnish

Stainless steel is an alloy of steel with chromium. When it's exposed to oxygen, the chromium forms a very thin, invisible layer of chromium oxide on the surface. That layer is the secret: it seals the metal underneath, and if it's scratched or worn away it simply re-forms on its own.

This is why stainless steel doesn't rust in the shower and doesn't discolour on your skin. It also contains no copper or brass, so there's nothing in it to turn your wrist green.

The everyday benefits

  • It doesn't tarnish or turn your skin green. Wear it all day, every day.
  • Water-friendly. Showers, hand-washing, swimming and sweaty workouts won't dull it — no more taking your necklace off before you get in the pool.
  • Holds its colour. No plating to flake off, so it looks the same in a year as it does the day you buy it.
  • Hypoallergenic. Stainless steel is one of the friendliest metals for sensitive skin and nickel allergies.
  • Strong and durable. It resists scratching, bending and denting far better than plated or softer metals.
  • Low maintenance. No polishing cloths, no special storage, no fuss.
  • Great value. All of the above without a precious-metal price tag.

Caring for stainless steel jewellery

One of the best things about stainless steel is how little it asks of you:

  1. A quick wipe with a soft cloth now and then is all it really needs.
  2. Warm water and mild soap will lift any build-up of sunscreen, soap or oils. Dry it with a soft cloth afterwards.
  3. Skip the harsh stuff — avoid chlorine-heavy cleaners and abrasives, which can dull the surface finish.
  4. Store it dry, ideally in a soft pouch, to keep it scratch-free.

That's the whole routine. No monthly polishing, no re-plating, no green wrists.

Is it right for you?

If you want jewellery you can put on and forget about — through showers, workouts, swimming and everyday life — stainless steel is one of the most practical choices there is. It keeps its shine, it's kind to sensitive skin, and it's built to last.
